A Dietetic Technician is a nutrition counselor who is able to work in a variety of healthcare and nutrition care settings such as hospitals, clinics, senior and child programs, schools, convalescent homes, rehabilitation centers, health spas and gyms, athletic programs, eating disorder programs and health education settings. The Dietetic Technician also has the option of working in food systems management under the supervision of or in consultation with a Registered Dietitian.
The Long Beach City College Dietetic Technician program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association.
Students interested in the Dietetic Technician certificate must first complete the 29 unit Dietetic Service Supervisor program. Upon completion of these 29 units the student will then complete 11 additional dietetic units of course work. Additionally, students must fulfill Associate of Arts degree requirements. The program requires additional 300 hours of clinical field experience at various healthcare facilities.
At the completion of the dietetic technician program the student will have completed 450 hours of clinical field experience as required by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association. (150 clinical hours for DSS and 300 hours for DT).

The DT student must successfully complete a competency examination before a DT certificate is awarded. The competency exam is offered at the conclusion of each semester and students can take the exam at the completion of all DT program courses.
Upon successful completion of the DT competency exam and all AA degree requirements, the gradulate will be issued a Verification Statement from the Program Director that will alow them to take the Registration Examination given by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Successful completion of the examination confers the title of Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR). Currently the California State Department of Health Services requires all dietetic technicians to be registered to practice in healthcare facilities in the states. 50 hours of ADA approved continuing education must be completed to maintain DTR status. Dietetic Technicians may belong to the ADA professional organization under the category of technician members.
